Hotel Wonderland was the first large scale immersive theatre production (or “onderdompel theater”) in the Netherlands and offered a wide variety of experiences. In Hotel Wonderland, audiences were temporarily suspended in time. In a converted factory space of 4000 square meters you came into contact with 12 residents: all of them there because they had hit a crossroads in their lives. As the show progressed every character had a choice to make which became increasingly clear as time began to run out. As a guest you had the unique opportunity to help them on their way by interacting, strategizing and playing with the characters, other audience members, and unique games and installations.
Ultimately, there was more to this magical realist world than you could have experienced in one night. As you explored the space you could either stick with one character or switch between stories of residents and the spatial integrations of interactive works of art that responded to your movement and touch. While the stories unfolded and continued to intertwine, you were able to enjoy delicious dishes and matching drinks served to you by a professional hospitality staff.
After an extensive initial period in 2020 doing Research & Development and creative consultancy in support of a mutual mission to bring high quality immersive theatre to the Netherlands I got involved as assistant director and all-round stage-manager to the creative ensemble of the cast, the production team of Cinereal and remained in close collaboration with the producers, Kelly Bartnik as the resident director, and all creatives behind the physical, technical, visual, and musical implementations, and supervised the integrity of the Dutch translations and adaptations, while continuing to iterate and design creative experiences.
Hotel Wonderland has now finalized its run.
